Board Effectiveness – Key Elements and Review

On Thursday, 14th March 2019, the Forum convened for an interesting morning session on Board Effectiveness – Key Elements and Review. The event heard from three experienced speakers, who each brought insightful perspectives to the event. Anne Nolan, an experienced Chair, non-executive director and former CEO gave a Chairperson’s perspective on what makes for effective boards, having served on boards across a number of sectors. Dr. Tom Ward, Governance Specialist with the IPA, provided attendees with some reflections on board effectiveness, using comparative (anonymised) data from a number of board reviews which the IPA has undertaken and also some reflections on process, culture and effectiveness. Finally, Angelo McNeive, Senior Associate with the IPA, explored the area of teams and team effectiveness.

See below the presentations used on the morning (note: given the nature of some of the material presented, some of the slides used on the morning are omitted from these published versions).
