The governance expectations of modern organisations and their Boards or Governing Bodies have arguably never been greater. This is illustrated in growing 'codification', with each part of the Irish public service and public benefit sector having an applicable code of governance. In many instances, codes have been revised, updated/added-to, and reissued. A governance code complements requirements in founding legislation for the entity, and also sits alongside numerous other requirements, arising from other statutes, circulars, agreements and reporting obligations.
At the same time, the focus on governance in recent years has also rightly given attention to tone, behaviours and culture, including boardroom dynamics, board-executive relationships, and organisation-funder reporting.
Governance expectations are growing not only within organisations, overseen by the Board, but also 'of organisations' with parent Departments, funders and key stakeholders more keenly focused on how organisations are run and seeking appropriate assurances.
This Forum session will explore the topic from a number of angles and consider:
- The growing expectations of the Board and organisations as experienced from the Boardroom - a Chair's perspective
- Boardroom dynamics in recent years
- Expectations of modern Boards - internally and externally
- Board-Executive relationships and assurances
- Project Governance - the Board's role, oversight and assurance seeking
- Themes and issues arising in Board performance reviews
The event will include the presentation of feedback and observations from attendees, gathered through a short pre-event survey.
The speaker line-up will include:
- Karen Furlong, experienced Chairperson and Non-Executive Director
- David Fox, experienced Board/Committee member and Project Management expert
- Dr Tom Ward & Kate O'Donnell, IPA Governance Team
