Our final event for 2020 will focus on non-profits and charities, revolving around the impact that the Charities Governance Code (2018) has had on entrenching and embedding a culture of good governance for non-profits and charities in Ireland.
This Charities Code provides guidance to non-profit organisations on how to abide by good governance standards and, beyond this, to improve their performance and accountability to the communities they serve, the wider public and with the donors that provide their funding. As such, this timely briefing will explore:
the current governance and accountability challenges for the non-profit sector and consider the linkages with public sector organisations that partner and channel funds to non-profits and charities for the delivery of key services
the main challenges and opportunities for charitable organisations in implementing the Code
the current state-of-play in terms of compliance with the Code and what more can be done to promote good governance and accountability in the charity sector
The event will also be of interest and importance to government departments and public bodies which engage with and fund non-profit and charitable entities.
Speakers
Angela Black
Angela has been Chief Executive of the Citizens Information Board (CIB) since 2014. CIB provides information, money advice and advocacy directly through www.citizensinformation.ie and indirectly through funding delivery service companies in over 200 locations in Ireland. Her previous career experience includes senior roles at the Department of Finance, the then Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, and the European Commission.
Angela is a member of the Irish Banking Culture Board, the Legal Services Regulatory Authority and is Chairperson, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital School, Crumlin.
Patricia Cronin
Patricia is a member of the Authority of the Charities Regulator and was a member of the Consultative Panel on the Governance of Charitable Organisations. She is a solicitor by profession and worked for many years with the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) as Legal Advisor and as Company Secretary. She subsequently worked in financial services and in private practice and also spent two years with the World Bank in Washington DC.
Richard Dixon
Richard is Director of Public Affairs at Concern, and a member of its Senior Management Team. He has chaired both ICTR and Cii – two representative bodies for charities in Ireland – and currently serves on the Board of Draíocht, the arts and entertainment charity in Dublin 15.
