"It's behaviours, stupid": People and dynamics for senior teams and boards
11 May 2023

Modern organisations and Boards will have governance framework policies and procedures in place. These will be reviewed periodically and enhanced. They include terms of reference, schedules of reserved matters and codes of conduct. But up-to-date policies do not, alone, yield good governance and effectiveness. They must be complemented by key people doing the right things in the right way. This will be influenced by knowledge, experience, attitudes, behaviours and values. The role of the Chair/CEO in getting the most of his/her team is also critically important.
In this Forum event, we take time to consider what makes for good and effective teams and boards through the prism of people and behaviours. With the help of three expert speakers, we'll consider issues such as:
- How to set the right tone with a senior team or board
- How to get the most from team/board members
- Building collegiality whilst avoiding group think
- Fostering diversity of views and perspectives
- Tackling poor or suboptimal behaviours
- Setting and living team/board values
- The role of the CEO/Chair in creating effective teams/boards
- Board-Executive relationships
The speaker line-up will include:
- Dr. Johanne Ward-Grosvold, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor), University of Bath
- Aidan Williams, Chairperson, National Asset Management Agency
- Dr. Tom Ward, Senior Governance Specialist, Institute of Public Administration
