Risk Appetite has been defined as 'the amount and type of risk an organisation is prepared to pursue, retain or take' (ISO) and also as 'the amount of risk, on a broad level, an entity is willing to accept in pursuit of value' (COSO). The COSO ERM Framework goes on to add that risk appetite'reflects the entity's risk management philosophy, and in turn influences the entity's culture and operating style'.
Risk appetite is therefore not a separate governance exercise, divorced from matters of strategy, performance, operations and compliance. It is innately part of these key organisational areas. But consistency of approach is key. Risk appetite needs to be formulated, reviewed, decided-upon, communicated and embedded throughout an organisation and key processes, thereby influencing the entity's culture and operating style. The cycle should continue over time, particularly at key junctures such as the development of a new business plan and strategy.
The purpose of this Forum event is to give focus to risk appetite and the opportunity it presents for organisational culture and operating styles. With the help of expert speakers, we will explore:
- what we mean by risk appetite
- risk appetite in a public service context
- the development of a risk appetite statement and key considerations
- the relationship between risk appetite and organisational culture and operating style
- embedding risk appetite to support effective performance and conformance
The speaker line-up for the event will include:
- Gareth Davis, Group Chief Risk Officer/Group Strategy and Risk Manager, ESB
- John Crawley, Master Trainer, Institute of Risk Management (UK) and highly experienced risk, governance and finance professional
The event will include interactive real-time anonymous polling of attendees on the subject matter, as well as Q&A/Panel discussion informed by attendee engagement.
