Tone Setting and Review - Boards, Senior Teams and Organisational Culture

The area of organisational culture has been garnering increased attention in governance terms, not only in narratives regarding failures in organisations (with no sector being immune), but also in official governance guidance. Tone, attitudes and behaviours after all play a critically important role in determining success and failure.
The focus on organisational culture places an increased onus on leaders and leadership teams, including Boards, Committees and the Senior Team, to not only set and live the right tone, behaviours and attitudes, but also to monitor and assess their organisation’s culture on an ongoing basis.
This Forum event provides an important opportunity to explore this area in practical terms, considering tone and culture from a process point of view and from ‘how to’ perspective. As such, concrete examples of recent cultural reviews will be discussed along with mechanisms that exist to assess and gauge behaviours and practice, the challenges of “feeding back” (externally and internally), and how to link results with follow-up actions and monitor progress.
With the help of three highly experienced practitioners and leaders, it will consider:
- How to define a strong vs weak organisational culture
- How to conduct a cultural review and what the current approaches and models are
- How to “see through” findings of cultural reviews and move from findings to actionable indicators of progress
- The roles of the Board, Committees and Senior Team and opportunities for a designated Culture Officer
- The importance of culture vis à vis staff, beneficiaries and stakeholders
